Indulging Off The Beaten Track in Rockingham

Since moving to WA ten years ago, I’ve been mesmerised by countless sunsets over the ocean. I had only planned to be in WA for six months, but on arrival I became enamoured with the soft pinks, blues, oranges and purples of the sea and sky as the sun dips past the horizon, and it’s been a love affair ever since.

I recently had the joy of joining local tour operator Off The Beaten Track’s Point Peron Sunset & Sparkling Soiree tour in Rockingham. Having been to Point Peron many times, I wasn’t sure if I’d learn or see anything I didn’t already know and was pleasantly surprised to pick up some new tidbits about the local area.

With our friendly, experienced guide Mike leading us, we were invited to observe some of the WWII relics scattered around Cape Peron. What a life it must have been for the 80 soldiers stationed at the bunkers at Point Peron, surrounded by extraordinary views of the Shoalwater Islands, Garden Island, and the Indian Ocean.

Our geological knowledge was tested as we contemplated the relative youth of the surrounding Tamala limestone. With the sea and winds constantly dancing along the coastline, Point Peron’s striking landscape is an ever-changing wonder.

The weather was pleasing, with light winds and a bright blue sky above us. As the sun slowly fell, the afternoon glow on the ocean and rugged shore was pure delight and provided a great opportunity for photos.

After an enjoyable walk exploring the lush natural surrounds and WWII relics, Mike led us to a quiet spot where we could soak in the sunset. With sparkling wine and a delicious cheeseboard spread on offer, it was the perfect way to relax and unwind on a Friday night.

I particularly enjoyed getting to know my fellow hikers, some of whom regularly attended Off the Beaten Track tours and were not shy to gush about owner Tracy and other guides they have hiked with. With offerings such as kayak tours in the Swan Valley, sunrise hikes in the Perth hills, and the Cape to Cape track down south, it’s clear that joining an Off the Beaten track tour is an incredible way to explore WA’s natural beauty.

There is something quite wonderful about watching the sunset in the company of others. Heading back, I felt undeniably invigorated, uplifted and grateful to have experienced Point Peron in such a new and interesting way.
