Top 10 Family-Friendly Activities in Rockingham

Searching for family-friendly things to do in Perth? Look no further, as you’ll be spoilt for choice with all kinds of activities in Rockingham and its surrounds – some of which are even free!

Whether you’re planning a family fun day in the school holidays or after something different to do this weekend with the kids, here are ten great ideas:

1. Wander through Point Peron

Venture along Rockingham’s protected reservoir of rugged limestone cliffs and stunning coastline by taking a lovely walk along Point Peron. This area is best known for its sightseeing, fishing, diving, swimming and picnicking – and the 3km walk trail is suitable for both families and those with prams. If you have a free moment, check out the historic World War II gun emplacements which were built for defending Garden Island and Fremantle.

2. Visit the renowned Penguin Island

For a truly memorable family experience – take a cruise on a glass-bottom boat to visit a colony of the world’s smallest penguins living on Penguin Island! If you’re feeling adventurous, Perth Wildlife Encounters also offers the experience of letting you swim with the dolphins, which are known for their playfulness. Without a doubt, it’s one of the best things to do in Perth. Don’t forget to look out for rare Australian sea lions lounging on the beach at Seal Island, as well as nesting pelicans, cormorants, ospreys and other sea birds.

3. Play time at one of many playgrounds

Kids feeling a bit restless? Take them to the award-winning Harbour Playground, a fully fenced, inclusive play space located on the Secret Harbour foreshore. Another fun accessible playground is Fantasy Park, equipped with large stone animal sculptures, BBQ facilities and picnic tables. Similarly, Shipwreck Cove in Golden Bay is a large nautical-themed playground complete with an epic lookout point, scooter and BMX tracks, BBQ facilities and plenty of picnic space. These playgrounds are big, colourful and will definitely keep your kids’ boredom at bay – and best of all, they’re free to enjoy!

4. Bask on the beach

Why not soak up some sun rays and spend a day in the water with the kids? As Perth’s only north-facing and protected beach, Rockingham Beach is the best place to be. Head down to the Boardwalk on the Rockingham foreshore to relax on the colourful lounge seating – while the kids enjoy the rope net climbing frame and shaded concrete slide. The calm, crystal clear waters and pristine white sand make for an extremely safe spot for family beach-going.

5. Indulge in some refreshing ice cream

After spending an idyllic afternoon on the Rockingham foreshore, you’ll have worked up an appetite for some delicious ice cream! Luckily, Eye Scream Cafe sits just opposite the foreshore, so you and your family can easily saunter on over for a cold, well-deserved treat. Not only do they have a variety of yummy flavours, but they also have delicious offerings like pancakes, crepes and coffees.

6. Learn about nature at Naragebup

Would you like to learn about the rehabilitation of baby turtles – or discover native and introduced aquatic species? At Naragebup (also known as the Rockingham Regional Environmental Centre), it’s all possible! Kids can also take the time to learn about the area’s Thrombolites. Not to mention, the bush tucker walk trail and the nature play area are both fun ways to pass the time. Keep an eye out for the centre’s frequent family events, including the chance to get up close and personal with bobtails, snakes and bearded dragons.

7. Tackle the obstacle course at Perth Aqua Park

Open from November to April, Perth Aqua Park in Baldivis features 100 different floating inflatable obstacles – bound to get you and your family bursting with laughter as you tackle each challenge! Out of all the things to do: race your loved ones down the 3-lane course, get launched from the jumping pillow or blast down the big slides. Or, if you prefer to spectate and grab a bite to eat, you can watch the action from the café located right on the lake’s edge.

8. Take a walk in the Baldivis Children’s Forest

A full sensory experience, the Baldivis Children’s Forest is full of different textures, objects and cool natural treasures for you and your family to explore! This 20-hectare public park amongst the Tuart trees is maintained as a bushland reserve, especially for kids. As well as that, Baldivis Children’s Forest has fantastic short walking trails and wetlands area for you and your little ones to splash around in. Don’t forget your gumboots!

9. Go fishing at Golden Ponds

Fancy a bit of fishing? Drop a line into one of the ponds at Golden Ponds Fish and Marron Park, located in Baldivis. Fishing rods and bait are available at this unique property, which is set on 100-acres of picturesque lakes and landscaped gardens. Even if you don’t catch anything, you can head on over to the Golden Ponds café after to feast on one of their spectacular seafood platters!

10. Catch a stunning beach sunset

Some of the best things in life are free, and watching the sunset over the ocean is one of them. In fact, sunset watching is a distinctly unique Perth experience – and what better place to do it than in Rockingham? As one of the best things to do, you can settle in at Rockingham Beach or pull up to any of the area’s beaches along the coast. To pair, pack a picnic or fresh fish and chips for the family. It’s the perfect accompaniment as you watch the sky come alive with gorgeous shades of burnt orange.
